Common upper materials include several major categories: PVC, PU, cowhide, microfiber, natural leather, and mesh.
(1) PVC: Most are cheaper, inferior in quality, not cold-resistant, and not crease-resistant; products do not use PVC as a material.
(2) PU leather/Cowhide: This is the most commonly used material on the market. PU leather is soft, elastic, feels good, and has a glossy surface. Cowhide has a mostly matte surface, feels rough, has little gloss, is matte, and mostly inelastic. Although cowhide and PU are different, they each have their own characteristics. Relatively speaking, PU is more widely used, with prices ranging from a dozen to over a hundred. Mid-range and above cowhide and PU leather are used for the uppers of athletic shoes.
(3) Microfiber: It has a soft texture, uniform texture, and properties very close to natural leather, but it is more even in thickness and more balanced in elasticity than natural leather, making it one of the best materials among artificial leathers. The cheapest is more than 70 yuan per yard, and the good ones are as high as more than 200 yuan. Most shoe styles of current quality use this material.
(4) Natural Leather: This is a commonly accepted material. It is breathable, soft, peel-resistant, crease-resistant, cold-resistant, and durable. The disadvantages are that it has flaws, many pores, irregular shape, and is difficult to cut. Natural leather has always been loved by people; shoe leather includes many types such as cowhide, pigskin, deerskin, ostrich skin, carp skin, and snakeskin. Athletic shoes generally use cowhide. Cowhide can be divided into top-layer leather and second-layer leather. The top layer is also called grain leather, and the second layer is called split leather or patent leather. Generally, the price of top-layer leather is 35 times that of second-layer leather. Athletic shoes, especially basketball shoes, use a large amount of top-layer cowhide, which is very valuable.
(5) Mesh: It is mainly divided into three categories: main mesh, used in exposed areas of the upper, light and with good breathability and bend resistance, such as sandwich mesh; collar lining materials, such as velvet and BK cloth; and lining materials, such as Lixin cloth. The main characteristics are wear resistance and good breathability.
